National Inner Wheel Project Cord Blood Research Inner Wheel has made major grants for research into many aspects of the collection and use of cord blood. This has included investigation of the ways of increasing the amount of cord blood harvested from each cord, how to grow cord blood cells in the laboratory, better ways of collecting and transporting cord blood to minimise losses and a number of others. All of these help to increase the knowledge of the miracles that cord blood may produce in treating critically ill children and adults. Research has shown that cord blood is rich in blood forming cells. It is the material of recycling. giving life today and saving lives tomorrow. When transplanted into a patient, different types of blood cells can be produced after the patients own blood cells have been depleted or destroyed. Transplantation of this blood produces far less immunological complications than transplantation of adult bone marrow. This means the matching between donors and recipients is less critical. Children with various blood illnesses in particular acute leukaemia have been the main focus of the treatment. *******************************
